The award recognises his international contribution to scientific evaluation through the SCImago Research Group, a global benchmark in scientometric analysis

On Monday 12 May, the University of Valencia will host the third edition of the Premios Cátedra (Chair Awards), an event dedicated to honouring excellence in entrepreneurship, innovation, and social cooperation. On this occasion, the Special Award will be presented to researcher Félix de Moya Anegón, founder of the SCImago Research Group, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the global analysis and evaluation of scientific activity.
Honouring a Pioneering Career
Professor Félix de Moya Anegón is widely recognised for his work in the field of scientometrics. He has led transformative projects that have reshaped how the impact of scientific research is measured. Among his most notable achievements is the development of the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR), an indicator that assesses the influence of academic journals based on data from the Scopus database.
The SCImago Research Group, established by De Moya-Anegón, is a collaborative initiative involving several academic institutions, including the University of Granada, the University of Extremadura, Carlos III University of Madrid, and the University of Alcalá. The group specialises in the analysis of scientific information through data visualisation techniques, offering tools such as the SJR and the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), which are widely used by universities and research centres to evaluate their performance.
One of the group’s most recent undertakings has focused on the media industry, with the development of a Digital Reputation Indicator (IRD) to assess the social impact of media outlets, alongside the publication of a global ranking—the SCImago Media Ranking (SMR). This project is the result of collaboration with experts from the University of Navarra and Pompeu Fabra University in Catalonia.
Félix de Moya Anegón’s professional career rests on three fundamental pillars: first, his distinguished academic profile, reflected in numerous publications in prestigious national and international journals and leadership of major research projects; second, his administrative roles since 1989 at the University of Granada—initially as Dean of the Faculty of Library Science and Documentation, later serving as Vice-Rector for University Community Services; and finally, his current entrepreneurial work.
His principal lines of research include: advanced information retrieval techniques for the development of real-time information systems; data visualisation techniques for scientific information, focusing on interface design, analysis, and evaluation in scientific domains; scientometric analysis aimed at solving specific problems across various disciplines; and the design of information systems in the field of scientometrics to support decision-making processes.

Chair Awards: Promoting Innovation and Social Engagement
The Chair Awards, organised by the University of Valencia, aim to recognise professionals and organisations that have shown exceptional commitment to entrepreneurship, innovation, and the social economy. In its third edition, the awards span various categories, including entrepreneurship in health sciences, social inclusion, and high technology. The initiative also includes distinctions for university lecturers who have excelled in areas such as finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship education.
The award ceremony will take place in the Assembly Hall of the University of Valencia’s Rectorate. The event will be attended by prominent academics and professionals from the fields of entrepreneurship and scientific research, who will pay tribute to the awardees for their contributions to academic and social development.
Through this recognition, Professor Félix de Moya Anegón joins a distinguished group of professionals whose work has had a significant impact on the advancement of science and innovation, reaffirming the central role of research as a driving force for societal progress.
